Iran's share of global sponge iron production is 50%

Iran ranks first in the production of spongy iron, also called direct reduced iron (BRI), covering 50 percent of all global production in the first five months of 2020. This was reported by the Iranian agency IRNA on June 26. According to the report of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation (IMIDRO), Iran overtook India in May and took first place in the TRI production. Iran produced 12 million tons, while India produced 11 million tons of sponge iron. It is reported that the volume of sponge iron production in Iran by May increased by 2.7 percent. Egypt, Mexico and Saudi Arabia rank third to fifth in the ranking, while the production of sponge iron in the first five months of 2020 in these countries is 2.2, 2.05 and 1.7 million tons, respectively.
