Dolphin deaths and oil spills cause protests in Mauritius

The mass death of dolphins, allegedly caused by an oil spill, caused thousands of protests in Mauritius. This was reported on August 29 by Reuters. Thousands of people took to the streets of the capital of Mauritius, the city of Port Louis, demanding that the authorities investigate the causes of the spill of oil products from the Japanese ship MV Wakashio and establish the causes of death of about 40 dolphins found near the site of the oil leak. The organizers of the protest rally and environmentalists explained that they did not trust the information provided by the government in connection with the oil spill and the mass death of marine mammals. In response, the Mauritius authorities assured citizens that all dead dolphins would be autopsied. In addition, a special commission was created to investigate the causes of the oil spill. Currently, experts have conducted an autopsy of two dead dolphins. According to veterinarians, no traces of petroleum products were found on the bodies of animals. Eco-Sud environmentalist group, in turn, insists on the presence of civic activists during the autopsy of dolphins. Earlier, the news agency reported on the arrest of the captain of the Japanese cargo ship MV Wakashio, which ran aground off the coast of Mauritius on July 25. Later, on August 6, oil products leaked from the vessel, and about 40 dead dolphins were found near the coastline. The authorities of Mauritius declared an environmental emergency.
